event of the 10th of Muharram
On the morning of Sunday, the 20th of September 1935, and while was one of the Husseinieh processions marching Sheikh Isa street. previously known as Biljrev street which extends from the government street to the Andalusia Garden Street, verbal altercation occurred between a number of participants in the parade and some passers-by and the viewers.
It is very normal, at least at the outset, and such an incident could have happened on any day and perhaps similar incidents occurred on other days, and perhaps in other previous processions. However, this incident was not normal. There were hidden figures planning and playing shrewdly to stir the situation. The truth is that a number of wise and powerful dignitaries and influential persons hurried to settle the situation and avoid escalation. These efforts could have succeeded if there have no not been cunning figures pouring oil on the fire! On the other hand, the government did not intervene in the Husseinieh processions only in coordination with the processions council, and then it would carry out its duties in maintaining security and order to ensure the protection and security of the participants and observe the conduct of processions closely.
Therefore, the government deployed police personnel on the roads to control any emergency ... The intervention of the police in the aforementioned incident in order to disperse the youths who rushed eagerly to support the altercation parties and to provide an opportunity for the wise to reconcile the situation.
This was an opportunity for the intervention of the group that originally created the spark of confrontations; this ignorant group rushed to stir the atmosphere and provoke confrontation with the police. Upon this the police was forced to request security reinforcements to reduce the reckless impulses. Some thought that the movement of police was for the intention of arresting the participants or thats what the frivolous group had convinced them. Of course, this led to chaos among the participants and reckless pushing and running in all directions. Some of these have entered British Missionary Square near the site of the incident; the guards tried to stop them from entering by firing in the air, which led to the intensification of the situation and resulted in numerous injuries ranged from light to serious, in addition to damages in public and private property.
The government, under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad, dealt with the situation with wisdom and knowledge; it called for additional troops of the police to maintain security and to prevent vengeance clashes between the two sides, in addition to curing the wounded. It also instructed the dignitaries of the two parties to make efforts to calming nerves and control the situation. Moreover, and in order to enable the security officers and some dignitaries to complete their duties to the fullest extent, His Highness Sheikh Salman issued an order preventing curfew from eight in the evening till five in the morning and banning gatherings of more than six people. The will of reason and wisdom quickly prevailed within 24 hours of the event and things were restored back to order.
Events were very painful for the country, and it rocked the heart of His Highness Sheikh Salman not only because of the wounds of which his citizens suffered, but also because of this turmoil and intrigues that are worse than murder, in Bahrain, which was a model for the coexistence of people of all classes and sects. On the other hand, the British Chancellor Biljrev was still playing according to the golden rule of the British "divide and rule"; he was trying in vain to influence His Highness Sheikh Salman by his claims that the agreement between the Shiites and the Sunnis in this country is a risk factor! However, the Chancellors attempts to stir His Highness Sheikh Salman against the Shiites had always been faced by His Highness wisdom, vision and faith in the State of Bahrain, the united people as one close-knit family.
It seems that the British Chancellor realized the failure of his mean schemes, so he resorted to intimidation, which is another way of making something out f nothing (making a pile out of one seed), as they say ... In order to achieve his malevolence plans, he followed very strange method, especially for a senior officer of his status and value; he became more like a press correspondent for the British newspapers providing fabricated news about national intrigues happening in Bahrain. Perhaps it is appropriate here to quote the news published in Londons "The Times" describing these events with a great deal dishonesty.
The News says: during a religious procession carried out by the Shiites in the 10th of Moharram, which marked the 20th of September, violent clashes took place between a group of Shiites and a group of Sunnis." This news reached the newspaper through this adviser "the correspondent!", and if we take into account that other telegrams he sent to a number of British newspapers about the same intrigues, the question that would impose itself here is: What are the motives of the British Chancellor behind such an act, which is inappropriate for his status and even conflicting with his duties? The British officials in Bahrain were full of surprises in those days.
History was recording all events Registering the failure of those who stirred and fueled the intrigues, to the extent that threatened the stability and security of the country. History recorded also the wisdom of His Highness Sheikh Salman in avoiding escalation and confrontation.
History also recorded how these events have shaped the expertise and tacit of the two brothers, and their initiative to deal with the event to set things right in a way that pleases the father, His Highness Sheikh as a Governor watching his assistants dealing with the serious events, parenting and watching the fruit he planted in his sons; the ability to confront and manage crises.
His Highness Sheikh Khalifa remembers how quickly he and his brother met as soon as they heard the news about the incident, and how they reached a wise, cautious decision. His Highness Sheikh Isas share of the duty requires that he accompanies his father and participate in the talks held in the Governor's Council to solve that problem, at the same time, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa went to the site of the event and directed the officials need to deal with the matter with wisdom and restraint.
